She holds a PhD in Law from King's College London (2018) and graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Portuguese Catholic University (Porto Regional Center). She holds a D.E.S. in European Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles - Institut d'Études Européennes (2001) and an LL.M. from Duke University (2004).

Co-author of the book “The Law and Politics of Global Competition” (2022, Oxford University Press) and author of several publications, Mariana Tavares has focused her professional activity on European Union law, competition law and regulation. She has worked as a consultant for the United Nations in the area of competition law and has served as a referendary at the Court of Justice of the European Union. She has held various management positions at the Portuguese Competition Authority. She has chaired several working groups of the European Competition Network and the International Competition Network and has also actively participated in the work of the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the EU-China Trade project.
She is a lecturer at the Portuguese Catholic University.
