In sport, there are cases that begin in court but are also shaped outside it, such as in the media or in public opinion. This is particularly evident when the person in question is a high-profile athlete, as the association of their name with a case can affect not only their defence, but also their career, market value and relationship with clubs, sponsors and fans. Many people closely follow high-profile sporting cases, some out of curiosity, others because they know that, beyond the news story, there are legal, sporting, financial and reputational consequences.<\/p>\n

When a case involves a high-profile athlete, its impact is rarely confined to the courtroom, making its management more challenging as the case comes under media scrutiny. In such cases, the proceedings are no longer discussed solely in court but are interpreted and judged in the media sphere, where public perception can carry almost as much weight as the final decision itself.<\/p>\n

This situation arises, for example, in criminal cases, such as those relating to drink-driving, domestic violence or sexual offences. In such cases, where athletes are in the public eye, long before any court ruling is made, the mere association of their name with an investigation can affect their market value, deter potential suitors, impact ongoing negotiations and even lead their current club to consider transferring the player.<\/p>\n

The 2026 FIFA World Cup illustrates this reality well, with several players making headlines not for their performance on the pitch, but for the legal proceedings in which they are involved. This is the case of a player from an African national team who is being investigated on suspicion of rape, which became public during the tournament and quickly dominated media coverage of his national team. Another player, also from an African national team, was denied entry into one of the host countries due to charges he faces in another country, preventing him from playing in the opening match. A player from a European national team was prevented from travelling with his squad after his authorization to enter the United States of America was left pending following a conviction for threats, only joining the team at a later stage. In all these cases, the proceedings ceased to be merely a legal matter and began to have immediate consequences in the sporting sphere.<\/p>\n

This is why a defence strategy cannot ignore the public dimension of the case, nor the sporting context in which it unfolds. The lawyer must anticipate the impact that each development may have outside the courtroom. What is communicated, when and how, can influence public perception, the athlete\u2019s performance in the competition and even the course of their career. After all, a hasty statement can undermine a defence, but silence taken out of context can also be interpreted unfavourably.<\/p>\n

This is not about turning the lawyer into a media spokesperson. It is about recognising that the management of the case must balance the legal position with the preservation of the athlete\u2019s image and professional stability, which may involve limiting media exposure until less sensitive moments, such as the close of the transfer window or the end of international competitions.<\/p>\n

In short, a lawyer\u2019s work in defending a high-profile athlete does not end at the courtroom door. The public arena is equally important, and it is here that a reputation is built up and torn down with a speed that legal proceedings cannot keep up with. The fact is that the media do not sit on the sidelines; they take to the field, often from the very first minute, and to ignore this aspect is to practise law with one hand tied behind one\u2019s back.<\/p>\n
